Great playing...and the production was exellent" Tom Lavin, Powder Blues Band, Blue

These 13, hard-hitting tracks rock the roost as they tip
the hat to the
likes of Slim Harpo, Albert King and Elmore James. If this sounds like
a
tall order, it's one that's well within the band's grasp,
leaning heavily on
a tight rhythm section, a crack guitarist (Buddy Love) or two (Dave
Vidal)
and some sensational keyboard action from Brendon Hedley. David Gogo
ices
the cake on a pair of tracks while Paul Wainwright's tenor sax adds a
smooth
yet slippery swing throughout. Stand-out tracks include Luther Dixon's
"Big
Boss Man" and a keyboard-heavy take on Robert Cray's :Phone Booth"
however,
here's guessing it's the rip-snorting, over-the-top renditions of songs
like
"Independence Blues" and "Money Maker" that play Summer's voice off
Love's
sinuous lead guitar to make the most impact live. These two were meant
to
play off each other and Boogie With The Devil is a surprisingly
accomplished
release with plenty of heart and no shortage of high-torque energy.""Hailing from Vancouver Island, Summer helms a gutsy, guitar-heavy brand of blues-rock with a 5-alarm voice that is equal parts power and persuasion. Eric Thom, Exclaim Magazine "If you love blues music when it is performed just right, then you better stand up right now and start screaming because this is one terrific CD that deserves all the praise it is receiving in the music industry. Summer and the Sinners have delivered a sound that is topped by no other in the blues business and will more than please. The tracks are unique and the band rocks with a hot blowing sax, smoking guitar and a swinging rhythm section that never gets out of the pocket. Blues radio will reach with extended arms for this new CD." "How Blue Can you
get? Brilliant. I thought only BB King could do this song
justice with a little help from Koko Taylor but I'm impressed with this

Eddie Russell "Sliding easily between Stax and straight Texas boogie, the new album Boogie With The Devil is certain to raise the stature of both Summer and her Sinners. Summer's voice is the vocal point as she effortlessly hits all her notes with a raunchy Etta James edge. Behind her,the chunky
intro to the opening track Breakin
Up Somebody's Home, shows a rhythm section relaxed
but tighter than ever. Guitarist Buddy
Love directs the band behind Summer and keeps things hot. There
is a jump blues vibe throughout, and on the straight party boogie of Big Boss Man, the dance floor
quotient is off the scale. Fans of the Fab T-Birds will love 12 Bar Blues.
But it all centers around the controlled growl of Summer who shows influences ranging from Bonnie Raitt to Big Mama Thorton. It's influence without imitation and that's the hallmark of great blues. That's Summer and The Sinners on Boogie With The Devil". Brad
Mennie, The Big Groove Radio Show Tuesdays 8-11PM (PST)
"Album No
2 from Summer And The Sinners really got my attention. After a debut album that I thought you couldn't beat, Summer and the guys rolled out the newy (Boogie With The Devil). This is an album that has raised the bar to a new level. They say doing covers is 'Old Hat'! Well, if this album doesn't grab ya', then I'll eat mine (hat that is!). I for one, don't care who wrote the tunes, but I do care how they come out the other end, and believe me, the finished product is just what this 'Little Oz Jock' ordered. Recommend it??? Bloody Oath Mate." TECKA: Tecka's Tracks HOTFM 106.7FM, Victoria, Australia www.geocities.com/terryiredale www.hotfm.org.au "With a great choice of songs, a great line-up of musicians this the perfect mix for a great album...but with the addition of Summer's voice, you know you got something special. Well done guys!" The blues jam at the Summit Theatre Show Lounge at the Cascades Casino in Langley BC showcases musicians from nearby White Rock, Langley, and across the Strait of Georgia from the provincial capitol of Victoria. The three-hour jam session was hosted by Victoria’s Summer and the Sinners. Summer and the Sinners host the only live blues jam on Vancouver Island in Victoria on Saturday afternoons at the Days Inn. At the Summit Theatre Show Lounge, Summer’s vocals ranged from sugary and sweet to soulful and sassy, but her stock in the blues trade is the strong and confident approach of an accomplished blues belter. Highlights during Summer and the Sinners’ set included a Texas tour-de-blues force on “Big Town Playboy,” plus a classic interpretation of Robert Johnson’s “Walking Blues.” A high-energy “Shake Your Moneymaker” helped get people up out of their chairs, and Buddy Love’s expert guitar picking updated Elmore James’ song forcefully. Summer and the Sinners play a diverse set, ranging from soulful blues, high-energy Chicago style blues, to down-home Delta and Texas blues, and the classic combination of the Hammond B-3 and saxophone adds considerable depth to Summer and the Sinners’ sound. Summer recruited the jammers to join her on two send-offs that finished the jam session in style: a classic from the Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street, “Hip Shake,” and Ann Peebles’ “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” The closing song has been covered by Etta James and LouAnn Barton, and after hearing Summer belt it out at the Summit Theatre jam session, she’s worthy of comparison to each of these legendary blueswomen. Eric Steiner, Washington State Blues Society Bluesletter, www.cosmik.com, Midwest Beat ericrichd@aol.com. Hot on the heels of “Stranger’s Blues”, Summer and the Sinner’s have produced another great one! Recorded and mastered by Rick Salt, at his Nanaimo studio, there is not a weak track on this album! With a star studded cast, this band is as tight as Louisiana Bullfrog’s butt! Treat yourself right and check it out - the choice of material is a joy! Sinners’ original, “Ooh Baby”, stands out proud and tall, right beside Blues “timepieces” like “Shake Your Money Maker”, “Big Boss Man” and “How Blue Can You Get?”. Summer’s voice has matured deliciously over the last couple of years, I’m reminded of Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Koko Taylor and Ruthie Foster all at once! Brendan Hedley, on piano and organ, and Paul Wainwright, on Saxophone deliver some of the finest, , fattest, raunchiest, intelligent passages that I have ever heard! Not just here and there, throughout the whole goddamn thang David Vidal, on lead guitar is a well respected veteran of the Vancouver blues scene. His work with the “Demons” and the “Fabricators” fit right in here! Sweeping bends, haunting octaves and slinky sixths don’t disappoint! Oh those icy cold single coil Fender pick-ups! And, there is just no mistaking David Gogo’s signature licks on “Sinner’s Boogie” and “Independent Blues”! Before I even looked at the album credits, I said to myself, “That sounds like Gogo.” and wow, does he let ‘er rip! Bassist, “r.j.” Johnson; Drummer and Producer, Paul Nixon and guitarist, with the voice of an angel, Buddy Love, tie the whole package together with a “blue ribbon” rhythm section tickin’ like a gold Rolex! Billieboy, CHLY FM, Nanaimo This one’s much stronger than their debut Stranger’s Blues – A terrific selection of songs - enhanced by the addition of sax on some tracks giving it “getting back to some real old school classic rhythm & blues”Although the songs come from various years, the quality of the musicianship is beyond reproach – all the feel and soul is there in heaps and Big Mama Summer’s power and passion in her delivery is great. IMHO the weakest track is “Phone Booth” – while my favourites are #2, 3,4.I hope there will be more tracks on the actual CD because at the moment it’s a bit short at just over 30 minutes. Henry Prokop, 101FM Honky Tonk Blues, Brisbane, Australia "Big-voiced Summer and her band, the Sinners, are a definite "cool breeze" from the Great White North! Based in British Columbia, Summer and the Sinners pound out a brand of blues that took us back to our beginnings of listening to the blues, back in the early Seventies. Summer is the lead vocalist, and she can really get one's attention with that sly, sexy, sultry growl in her delivery. MCBS members will liken her to our own Miranda Louise in that regard. Backed by Buddy Love on guitar, Bob Miron on bass, Chris Van De Water on B-3, Mike Spear on drums and Paul Wainwright on sax, these guys will give you that "old-school" feel for the days of Mike Bloomfield or Janis Joplin and Big Brother. Summer does a fine job on covers of "Hope And Pray," "Rock Steady," "Hound Dog," and an amped-up version of Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues." Our favorites, tho, were the tale of a not-so-good man with a real "Bad Track Record," the funky "The Moon Is Full," and the hilarious "Monkey Song!" This is not the Lefty Ken\Wigg Walker\Stacy Mitchart tune, but it's still a good-time story of a woman who's leavin' and taking her monkey with her!! These guys are definitely worth checking out, and this one was a pleasure to listen to! Go to www.summmerandthesinners.com and give 'em a listen! Sheryl and Don Crow, the Music City Blues Society Blues Letter, Nashville Tennessee (www.musiccityblues.org) "With a voice reminiscent of Koko Taylor, Summer brought the house down... guaranteed to send shivers down your spine." Niki Neff - Cosmic Debris "Summer is an exciting new voice on the scene. And she is finding her way." Ira Dobson Select Press "Great blues, great vocals and a smokin' band - the whole package." Raymond Mitchell - Blues Review "They're the best blues band to come out of this area in decades - I go to every show." Tom K - Sinners fan |
